Cancer is Killing Our Kids

Before cancer invaded our lives, we didn’t know how pervasive childhood cancer is.

Now we know. And we feel obligated to share what we have learned…

1

Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer of children and teenagers, more than any other disease.

46

Every school day 46 children will be diagnosed with cancer.

49

Each week, 49 children die from cancer and nearly 40,000 children are in treatment.

The Result

73% of surviving children have chronic, long-term health issues ranging from infertility to developmental problems to major organ damage to higher risk for secondary cancers, while 42% have life-threatening side effects.

Yet Childhood Cancer Research is Underfunded

It seems inconceivable that so little funding and research is designated to fight childhood cancer. The truth is that childhood cancer drugs just aren’t very profitable for pharmaceutical companies, and adult cancers (like prostate and breast cancer) get more attention. These statistics about childhood cancer research may surprise you.

8

Only 8.3% of the National Cancer Institute’s annual cancer research budget is allocated to childhood cancer research.

75

Survival rates, while improving, have leveled at around 75%.

3

In the past 35 years, only 3 new FDA-approved drugs were specifically developed to treat children with cancer.

This is Why We Continue to Fight

We’ve visited too many kids in hospitals and attended too many kids’ funerals. We’ve seen the devastating effects of toxic chemotherapy treatments and felt the anguish upon hearing that a B+ Hero’s cancer has returned.

We Are Committed To

Financial Assistance2-01.png

keeping our expenses low so that we can help more families battling childhood cancer. We work hard to put $.96 of every dollar donated to our programs. We are proud to be the #1 provider of assistance to families of kids with cancer, helping ~3,000 families from over 200 hospitals nationwide last year.
